THE BRITISH MARK IS A STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE, AN AGREED RATING FOR COMPANIES WHO ARE DOING SOMETHING EXCEPTIONALLY WELL.

CREDITATION & SHORTLISTING METHODOLOGY
The British Leadership Council and Power 100 research team undertake an independent, evidence-led process to identify exceptional organisations and leadership teams shaping British education.
Our approach combines artificial intelligence, data analysis, independent research and human editorial review to examine a broad cross-section of the education landscape. This includes schools, academy trusts, colleges, universities, apprenticeship and skills providers, education technology businesses, professional bodies and organisations supporting teaching and learning.
AI-assisted research tools are used to help identify patterns, emerging leaders, high-performing organisations and evidence of sustained impact across large volumes of publicly available information. This enables our researchers to examine a wider education landscape and identify organisations and leadership teams that may otherwise sit beyond traditional awards, rankings or established networks.
Technology supports the process. It does not make the final decision.
Our research team reviews and cross-references information drawn from publicly available sources, including government and regulatory data, inspection and performance information, institutional reports, published accounts, education research, sector reports, recognised rankings, professional bodies, media coverage, organisational publications and verified nominations.
Each organisation is considered within the context of its own sector, size, purpose and operating environment. A university is not assessed in the same way as a school, academy trust, apprenticeship provider or education technology organisation. Our methodology is designed to recognise excellence in its appropriate context.
THE FIVE-STAR ASSESSMENT
The Exceptional Organisations and Leadership Five-Star Mark considers a broad range of indicators across organisational performance and leadership.
These may include educational outcomes, teaching and learning, leadership quality, innovation, student or pupil experience, employee engagement, inclusion, social impact, research, skills development, technology, sustainability, governance and evidence of recognised best practice.
Our AI-assisted analysis helps organise, compare and identify relevant evidence across these indicators. The Power 100 research team then undertakes further review, validation and, where appropriate, peer or specialist assessment.
Particular attention is given to evidence of progress, measurable impact and sustained achievement. We look beyond reputation and profile to consider what an organisation and its leadership team are actually delivering, how they are improving education and the wider contribution they are making to British society and the economy.
IDENTIFYING EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP
Exceptional organisations are rarely created by accident. Leadership is therefore a fundamental part of the assessment.
Our research considers the individuals and leadership teams responsible for setting direction, raising standards, creating cultures of excellence and delivering meaningful change.
Leadership assessment may consider strategic vision, organisational performance, innovation, sector influence, workforce development, collaboration, inclusion and the ability to create sustained educational impact.
AI-assisted research enables our analysts to map publicly evidenced leadership activity and identify emerging patterns of influence and impact. These findings are independently reviewed by researchers and assessed alongside wider organisational evidence.

THE SHORTLIST
Our shortlist is developed through a multi-stage process of discovery, analysis, research, cross-referencing and human review. Organisations may be identified through independent research, data analysis, sector intelligence or nomination.
Being the largest, oldest or most widely known organisation does not automatically result in inclusion. Equally, smaller institutions and emerging organisations are not disadvantaged simply because they have a lower public profile.
To be shortlisted, an organisation must demonstrate evidence that its impact extends beyond the expected fundamentals of educational delivery.
We are looking for organisations and leadership teams that are raising standards, transforming teaching and learning, widening opportunity, pioneering new approaches, developing talent or making an exceptional contribution to British education.
The final shortlist represents our independent assessment of the organisations and leadership teams demonstrating exceptional achievement, influence and impact within their respective areas of British education.
AI helps us search wider. Data helps us examine deeper. Independent research and human judgement determine who is recognised.
